According to TSN's Darren Dreger, things are escalating between veteran NHL executive Jim Rutherford and the Vancouver Canucks.

Dreger noted that a deal between the two sides is expected to be completed sooner rather than later. However, he also mentioned that it is unknown at this time whether Rutherford will take on the president's role or both the president and general manager roles. The Canucks have been looking for a new general manager after firing Jim Benning late last week.

UPDATE: Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini has confirmed that Rutherford has been hired as President of Hockey Operations. He will also serve as interim GM until a new general manager has been found.

Rutherford, 72, last served in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins as their general manager. He stepped down from the team in early 2021, though did so himself as he was not fired from the position. While nothing was ever confirmed regarding his exit, many suggested he was simply looking for a change of scenery. Expect a deal between him and the Canucks to be announced soon, possibly even later today.
