The Minnesota Wild will break new ground in 2022 after the team announced its intent to officially retire former captain Mikko Koivu's #9 on March 13th.

The 38-year-old will be the first player in franchise history to have his jersey number raised to the rafters at Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Koivu is the all-time franchise leader in games played (1028), points (709) and assists (504) and ranks second all-time in goals (205). Only Marian Gaborik (219) has scored more goals in Wild franchise history.

The native of Turku, Finland served as captain of the Wild for 11 of his 15 seasons in Minnesota before ultimately signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent in 2020.

Koivu announced his retirement this past February, a few short months after signing in Columbus, playing just 7 games for the Blue Jackets.
