Earlier this year, former Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen was accused of sexual assault by a Vancouver woman who brought the issue to light on social media.

Vancouver police began their investigation back in May, and have now put it in the hand of the Crown prosecutors. VPD spokeswoman Const. Tania Visintin told Postmedia News on Friday that the police file had recently been turned over to prosecutors.

«We are waiting to hear back if there will be charge approval or not,» she said. «It is not concluded. Crown is reviewing the file. They could either accept it and push charges through, or suggest other tasks be done before approving it. Or just reject it all together. I won't really know where it is at until Crown gives us back their review.»

Shortly after this claim came to light, the Canucks bought out Virtanen's contract. After he didn't receive interest from any other NHL clubs in free agency, he chose to sign overseas with Moscow Spartak in the KHL.
