The Pierre-Luc Dubois for Patrik Laine trade earlier this year was one of the biggest stories from the 2020-21 season, with many expecting both players to thrive with a change of scenery.

What we know now is that both players struggled in their new environments with Laine managing just 21 points in 45 games in Columbus, while Dubois stalled out at 20 points in 41 games with the Jets.

Dubois spoke with the media on Monday and did his best to explain to the NHL Network's Dave McCarthy where he felt that his struggles came from last season, leaning heavily on the fact that he simply did not feel like himself last season.

"I kind of lost myself last year in the trade, the injuries, and my play, who I was on the ice, off the ice, I felt wasn't the true 'me'...I think this year will be the same 'me' as before, not the 'me' from last year.»

Dubois famously quit on the Blue Jackets last season, resulting in being benched multiple times by then head coach John Tortorella and was scratched for a stretch of games while a trade could be facilitated.

Dubois hopes to rebound in a big way after a down season, posting career-worst totals in both goals and assists last season.

The 23-year-old is just two seasons removed from a 27-goal, 61-point season in 2018-19.
