After a 2019-20 season in which they showed plenty of promise, the Vancouver Canucks took a major step backward in 2020-21, finishing dead last in the North Division. While some of that can be blamed on many of their players becoming quite ill from COVID-19 in the late part of the season, the fact of the matter is they were bad all year long, something head coach Travis Green is very well aware of.

"We were on the right road going into the bubble year and we've been taking steps, but last year was tough," Green said to Ben Kuzma of The Province. "We're not going to hide from that. We didn't have a very good season, and I expect a bounce-back year."

For his own job's sake, Green better hope that is the case. While the blame falls more on the shoulders of general manager Jim Benning, Green may be the sacrificial lamb if the team gets off to a bad start in 2021-22. With the promising young talent they have on their roster, a bounce back is certainly not out of the question, though they will first have to work out a contract with defenceman Quinn Hughes who remains a restricted free agent.
