Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares hasn't spoken about his postseason injury, suffered during Game 1 of the Leafs' first round matchup against the Montreal Canadiens, or his recovery in great detail, but has quietly been progressing very well throughout the offseason.

Tavares spoke with the NHL Network on Friday, revealing that he has had a seamless recovery, free of any real setbacks or hiccups this summer, which puts him in a pretty good spot to come back strong to start the 2021-22 season.

"It's been a great offseason for myself, obviously from a health standpoint, but even more so I think just continuing to get back to work and try to get better and recover well, obviously I think some time really helps. I'm really fortunate that it wasn't anything much more than the incident and I really kind of came out of the hospital and I've been doing really well ever since and didn't really have any hiccups or any issues, just kind of kept building from there.

"So it's been a good offseason, I'm doing great."

While the original incident, a nasty, inadvertent knee to the head from Montreal Canadiens forward Corey Perry looked pretty scary, Tavares appeared to escape the worst of it and had even begun light skating approximately one week after the incident. Since that time, Tavares has been able to gradually ramp up the intensity of his workouts, skating with some colleagues over the offseason as he works his way towards Maple Leafs training camp in mid to late September.

"It was nice to just kind of get back out and working on some things I wanted to work on," Tavares said. "Come off the injury and be on the ice a lot and get a good feel for my game and go from there and then just try to be out there with a good bunch of guys up here up north."

JT is nearly a point-per-game in his Leafs career, having registered 198 points in just 201 games as a Toronto Maple Leaf. The soon-to-be 31-year-old has amassed 364 goals and 819 points in 870 games in his 12-year NHL career.
