Flyers and Giroux not talking extension

While the Philadelphia Flyers were able to get a contract extension worked out with Sean Couturier, don't expect the same to happen with Claude Giroux in the near future.

Giroux, 33, and the team will hold off on contract talks until the 2021-22 season has wrapped up.

«I've had good conversations with Claude and with Pat Brisson, his agent, and at this point our plan is to play the season out and we'll talk at the end of (it),» Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher told media on Thursday.

«I think we're both comfortable with that,» Fletcher continued. «Claude's our captain, he's a great player, and I anticipate that we'll find a way to continue that relationship going forward, but right now I think what we'll do is we'll just get through the season and we'll look at the situation and see where he's at, see where we're at, and we'll do what's best for everybody.»

Giroux, who has played his entire 943 NHL game career in a Flyers uniform, is in the final year of an eight-year, $66.2 million deal that carries an AAV of $8.28 million. Though he has slowed down some in recent seasons, he is still a very effective player proven by his 16 goals and 43 points in 54 games this past season. Given his age however, it is likely that the Flyers want to see if there is a continued drop off in his play this season before committing big dollars to him once again.
