Survivors group calls on Stan Bowman to take leave from US Olympic team; Bowman responds
Chicago Blackhawks general manager is being called upon to take a leave of absence from the US Olympic hockey team "unless or until he's cleared of allegedly covering up sex abuse." Bowman has been named GM of the men's hockey team for the 2022 Olympics. TSN's Rick Westhead has been contacted by the "Army of Survivors", an advocacy group founded by survivors of Larry Nassar, a former team doctor for the United States women's national gymnastics team, who was convicted of sexually assaulting more than 250 young girls.
Westhead decided to ask Bowman about the request that he take a leave of absence during a news conference Monday to talk about the Blackhawks acquisition of Marc-Andre Fleury. Bowman responded, sort of.
"USA Hockey has been in close contact with the Blackhawks on a variety of topics," said Bowman. "I'm not really involved in those conversations."
"That's not something I can comment on directly," Bowman added.
Bowman was GM of Chicago in 2010 when a player was allegedly sexually assaulted and threatened by Blackhawks video coach Brad Aldrich. The player, who has filed a lawsuit, claims he brought his concerns to the team, but they were swept under the rug and police were never called. Bowman has since hired a legal firm to conduct a review of how the team handled the situation and has promised to make the findings fully public. Aldrich left the team shortly after the allegations were brought forward. However, he was provided a letter of recommendation from the Blackhawks and is now a registered sex offender in Michigan following an incident involving a high school hockey player.
