As was speculated on Thursday, the New York Rangers are expected to initiate the buyout process for defenseman Tony DeAngelo on Friday, which will allow DeAngelo to become an unrestricted free agent on July 28th.

On the whole, the vexatious blueliner has been unable to find a stable home in the National Hockey League due to his disruptive behavior away from the ice and in the locker room.

DeAngelo is expected to be placed on waivers for the purpose of a buyout later today and once he clears, the two-year cap charge for the Rangers, per DFO's Frank Seravalli, will be $383,000 and $883,000.

DeAngelo was drafted 19th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning back in 2014. He played 69 games for the team's AHL affiliate Syracuse Crunch before being dealt to the Arizona Coyotes in 2016. He would last just one season in Arizona before attitude problems forced a move to the Rangers.

The 25-year-old played in parts of three seasons for the Rangers, putting up a career high 53 points in 68 games in 2019-20.

DeAngelo made it just 6 games into his fourth season with the Rangers in 2020-21 before an altercation with teammate Alexandar Giorgiev on January 31st led to another teammate allegedly striking DeAngelo in the face.

At this point, it would be surprising to see DeAngelo back in the National Hockey League next season. Maybe ever.
