The Montreal Canadiens haven't been great in net in 2024/25, and now they're making a huge move that will allow a top prospect his first shot in the NHL as the team look towards the future and a potential star that they may have in Jakub Dobes.

This season has been a very intriguing one in Montreal, and while the team are expected to trade some veterans in 2024/25, there is still reason for hope and optimism.

Now, it appears as though Canadiens fans are about to get a glimpse of the future, with goaltender Jakub Dobes set to take his spot on the roster, with Head Coach Martin St. Louis confirming that Cayden Primeau will hit waivers on Saturday to make way for him.

While Primeau has struggled in 2024/25 (4.70 GAA, .836 save percentage), Dobes has been thriving in the AHL with the Laval Rocket, posting a .910 save percentage and a 2.44 GAA across 14 starts.

Not only that, but St. Louis has confirmed that Dobes will make his NHL debut against Florida on Saturday, with the 23-year old former fifth-round pick representing a major change in net for the Canadiens.

While Samuel Montembault will remain a key piece of this netminding duo in Montreal, the team are young and are looking towards the future, and given that the team know what he can be, it makes sense to give a young, rising star an opportunity especially given how much the youth has inspired this team in 2024/25.

As for Primeau, it's unclear what the future holds, as the once highly touted prospect just struggled to adapt at the NHL level given the poor defense's he's played behind in Montreal, he just never had a chance, so expect another team to take a huge chance on him.
