Nashville Predators' Michael McCarron was involved in a very close call when the skateblade of a Dallas Stars player appeared to clip him in the neck.

The Nashville Predators came out aggressive and hard against the Dallas Stars with a heavy forecheck and an entirely different philosophy on D. Physical, intense, and it meant that the visitors had the early advantage in shots, 8-5 in the opening period.

But this game will be remembered for one terrifying incident that has put player safety, and the call for neck protection in hockey, back into the spotlight.

One of the more scarier moments of the night came during that first period when Michael McCarron narrowly avoided what could've been a career-altering injury.

During a physical play against Lian Bichsel, Michael McCarron was cut near his neck/head area by the skate of Lian Bichsel. The incident occurred as Bichsel's skate, amid both players being entangled, accidentally rose.

McCarron went directly off the ice and downstairs to the locker room, which, understandably, had fellow teammates and the fans a bit concerned regarding the severity of the injury.

Luckily, he was back on the ice for the second period and played without any consequences, thus minor still. The incident proved to be quite a grim occurrence that reflected the risk players have on the ice.

That near miss has been a factor in the increasing calls within the fraternity of hockey for the use of obligatory neck protection. While neck guards and cut-resistant materials are used, most leagues leave their use to be optional.

TJ Oshie is adamant that players need to better protect themselves and the league needs to do better, as he vented his frustration on X with a link to a company that offers good protection.

Such devices would minimize the chances of accidents due to errant skates during fast-motion, highly intensive games, which can occur in the blink of an eye.
