New head coach of the Leafs Craig Berube believes Marner will be starting the season in Toronto, but GM Brad Treliving wouldn't confirm for how long.

A few days following the NHL entry draft in June, Craig Berube commented on how he was looking forward to coaching a player like Marner. That led many people to believe that Marner would no longer be traded, however a lack of approval from GM Brad Treliving still leaves doubt in the minds of some fans.
Berube had a chat recently with Kevin McGran from The Star, and he affirmed the comments he made following the draft, that yes, Marner would be on the Leafs' roster for training camp.
"(Marner is) a character guy," Berube told McGran. "He's a great person. Obviously, a great player. I'm looking forward to coaching him."
GM Brad Treliving would not divulge too much infromation as to where the Leafs were at with Marner's contract negotiations, but for those who have seen him last season, he really praised Matthews and Nylander and expressed interest in retaining them long-term, but has yet to do the same regarding Marner.
Lots of quotes on what Treliving said about Marner today. Here's video of what he said & how he looked when he said it! Pretty standard stuff here. What I DIDN'T hear was «our priority is to keep Mitch a Leaf for a very long time!» IMO- it's on the table! #Leafs #Leafsforever

Berube's no nonsense mentality and coaching style may not always sit well with certain players around the league, so it will be interesting to see how Marner reacts to and plays this upcoming season under his new coach.
