As the summer trade deals ramp up, Elliotten Friedman took his chance on a recent edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast to imply that the Toronto Maple Leafs trade decision on Mitch Marner could take a while.

Mitch Marner looked ready coming into this NHL playoffs, earning 85 total points in 69 games during the regular season. However, the Toronto Maple Leafs repeated history yet against this season, losing in the first round of their series against the Boston Bruins in game seven.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs have been eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the 2024 NHL Playoffs #LeafsForever #NHL #NHLPlayoffs2024 #MapleLeafs"

Aside from the team's overall inadequacy, Marner could not put up a reasonable front in the series himself. Despite being one of their 'Core Four,' the 27-year-old forward only put up one goal and two assists in the entirety of the series. It only adds to his resumé of disappointing Cup runs.
"Playoff goals:

Mitch Marner : 10 goals in 57 career playoff games.

Zach Hyman: 13 goals in 16 playoff games this season, alone.

However, despite calls from fans to part ways with this inconsistent player, it seems the Toronto Maple Leafs may not be done with Marner after all. According to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the contract negotiation period will likely end later than anyone wants. With a process involving a solid regular-season player, limited cap space, and a highly emotional base, the deal will likely take some time before being finalized.
"Elliotte Friedman on the ongoing Mitch Marner situation:

'Don't be surprised if Marner's situation plays out over the next season in Toronto.'

The delicate negotiations between player and team aim for a win-win, with the Leafs seeking a beneficial trade or strategic use of cap space. Concerns include fan reactions if Marner remains unsigned and a trade based on emotions like the Kadri trade a few seasons ago, which the Leafs do not want to repeat. They fear Marner could thrive as a great player in a quieter market.

'If the contract demands on both sides are crazy, it could lead to a divorce. But on June 2nd, I'm not certain that Marner will be traded.'
