With the off-season must-sign date now upon us, the Montreal Canadiens have officially released three of their 2022 prospects: Cedrick Guindon, Petteri Nurdi, and Miguel Tourigny.

The Montreal Canadiens have had difficulties rebuilding the team back to their glory days. Now, with three consecutive season finishes as the bottom Canadian franchise, general manager Kent Hughes has been working hard to figure out the best strategies for utilizing younger prospects. This included signing a two-year, entry-level contract with 21-year-old center forward Jared Davidson, who scored 11 goals and 16 points in 38 games this AHL season with the Laval Rockets.
"The Montreal Canadiens announced the team signed forward Jared Davidson to a 2-year-entry-level contract earlier today. Davidson played 38 games with the Laval Rocket in the 2023-24 AHL season. He scored 11 goals and had 16 points combined. #NHL #canadiens #nhlnews"
Now, the unofficial start to the off-season has arrived, and it appears Davidson was the only one of their must-sign prospects to get a contract. The other three have been officially relinquished from the team.
"The Canadiens had four prospects who needed entry-level contracts this spring.

The #GoHabsGo signed one, but opted to relinquish the rights to three other prospects.

Such is life in a rebuilding organization that is aiming for quality over quantity⬇️"
Among these released players are center forward Cedrick Guindon, drafted 127th overall, and two defensemen by the names of Petteri Nurmi and Migüel Tourigny, who were drafted 194th and 216th overall respectively.
"With the 5pm ET deadline now passed, the Canadiens no longer have the rights to the following three prospects:

- Cedrick Guindon
- Petteri Nurmi
- Miguel Tourigny

#GoHabsGo"
Though Nurmi and Tourigny have not produced much, many are surprised by the Canadiens' decision to pass up Guindon. The 20-year-old forward did see a slight decline this last season with the Owen Sound, but his time in the OHL brought 185 points in 204 games.
"It's a little surprising that Habs did not sign an ELC with Cedrick Guindon. I admit his point production did drop this season in his final OHL season with Owen Sound. He did not miss a regular season game in his three seasons tallying 185 points in 204 games."
With this level of production, it does beg the question of what Kent Hughes is aiming for in Montreal's rebuilding process. Hopefully, the choices he and his advisors made will not come back to bite the team. If it does, it could be a fourth consecutive season at the bottom of the league for the Canadiens.
