The San Jose Sharks battled the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, and just over four minutes into the final frame, the Sharks took a faceoff violation penalty which head coach Bob Boughner described as "a travesty".

After the first Sharks player was kicked out of the draw, Patrick Marleau came into take it. The ref deemed that Marleau cheated on the draw and gave the Sharks a Bench Minor Penalty for Delay of Game – Face-off Violation, which frustrated both the players, and head coach Bob Boughner.

Twelve seconds into the powerplay, St. Louis scored, and held the lead for the remainder of the game, adding two more goals en route to a 5-2 win.

"There's really no explanation for it there," head coach Bob Boughner said, according to Alex Espinoza of NBCSN. "Just a horrible call. I guess he spun too early or something? I don't know. I've watched it three times. It's completely fine. It's Patty Marleau by the way. The guy's going to set Gordie Howe's (games played) record and you threw him in the box and it affected the whole game. Just use your head. It's frustrating for me and I don't want to say the wrong thing. But what went on there was a travesty."

"Extremely shocked,» Marleau said. "I thought it was a good, clean draw. Then you see on the replay, I still think that way. Their player's stick was even on my side of the dot before the puck was dropped. It is what it is."

Sharks goaltender Devan Dubnyk also voiced his displeasure during his post-game interviews.

"It's embarrassing," he said. "It's Mickey Mouse. I don't care if you want to say 'follow the rule book.' It's completely ridiculous to make a call like that in a 2-2 hockey game in the third period in the middle of the season. I don't know what to say. It's incredible."

The Sharks will be back in action on Monday night when they host the Los Angeles Kings at 10:30pm ET.
