A tough break for one of the top prospects in the upcoming 2021 NHL draft. According to a report, Luke Hughes is dealing with "several torn ligaments in his foot," and his season with the U.S. National Development Program is done.

"Haven't seen this out there yet. My understanding based on a conversation with a well-placed source is that top 2021 NHL Draft prospect Luke Hughes is going to be out for the remainder of the 2020-21 season," said J.D. Burke of Elite Prospects. "The phrasing was 'several torn ligaments in his foot.'

Hughes, 17, is the youngest brother of Jack (New Jersey Devils) and Quinn (Vancouver Canucks). Both have stated that he is the best hockey player out of the three.

"Before anyone asks, the U18s are a total non-starter," Burke added. "The focus has shifted to getting prepared to start his college career on time next season."

Hughes has already committed to playing for the University of Michigan next season, regardless of who takes him in the draft.

NHL.com has ranked Hughes at fifth for draft prospects in 2021. He is one of four defenceman listed in the top five prospects for the next draft.

"When Hughes has the puck on his stick in the offensive zone, it is a sight to behold," said Mathieu Sheridan of The Hockey Writers. "Hughes is so good at using his edges and quick feet to create open space for his teammates. This was the case in a game a few weeks back. He was able to keep possession for about 10 seconds in the offensive zone and made the opposition look silly. Even under pressure, he was able to maintain possession and found a teammate in the slot for a great scoring chance."

The hope now is that Hughes can recover enough to be ready for next season and doesn't have to deal with any lingering issues because of these injuries.
