The Detroit Red Wings announced that they've placed Austin Czarnik on waivers after missing the playoffs.

Last night, even if the Wings won their back-to-back games against the Montreal Canadiens, they fell short of a playoff berth.

The Washington Capitals sealed Detroit's fate by winning against the Philadelphia Flyers and clinching the last available Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Now that the Red Wings are set to miss the playoffs for the eighth consecutive season, the general manager Steve Yzerman is getting ready for the offseason and the AHL playoffs.

The Grand Rapids Griffins, in the AHL, have clinched their playoff spot a while ago. As they prepare for the first round, the team is set to receive reinforcements from the NHL: Austin Czarnik. However, he'll need to clear waivers before it happens.

Czarnik, 31, scored one assist in 34 games this season with the Red Wings, and tallied 26 points in 36 AHL games.

More to come.
