A top college hockey free agent, who has had an excellent season between the pipes, is about to be awarded his first ever NHL contract. According to a report, he'll be going to a Western Conference team already considered a powerhouse.

Edmonton Considered Top Spot for College Free Agent to Land

Connor Ungar has had a fantastic year with the Brock Badgers, based in Toronto. The 22-year-old has started in 26 games, compiling a record of 20-6-0, with an impressive .932 save percentage, and a 2.15 goals against average. According to Ben Steiner of CBC Sports, he's very close to signing with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent. He will join the team's system as soon as the deal is finalized, but will start with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League (AHL)

"While he could return for another four seasons with the Badgers, his ability to dominate the OUA West with a .932 save percentage and three shutouts caught the eye of the pro game, potentially enough to earn an NHL contract, considering he's just 22-years-old.

Sources have indicated that the Edmonton Oilers are leading the charge on adding Ungar, leading choices among offers he's fielding."

Standout College Hockey Goalie Getting NHL Contract with Edmonton Oilers

Ungar went undrafted by any team in the NHL, playing in the Western Hockey League (WHL) until he aged out last season. While his last two seasons with the WHL's Red Deer Rebels and Moose Jay Warriors were very good, his current season with the Brock Badgers has been a real standout, enough to draw interest from various NHL teams.

After a rough start to the season for Edmonton's goalies, the tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have improved considerably over the past couple of months. Still, adding more depth, and grabbing a free agent netminder that appears to capable of much more than earlier predictions would be a great grab by GM Ken Holland. The Oilers are hoping for a long playoff run, and have the team to do it. However, goaltending remains a question mark for the team going into the post season.
