Bob Boughner, head coach of the San Jose Sharks, was quick to point the finger at his goaltender after a 6-2 blow out loss to the L.A. Kings Thursday night. Martin Jones was left in net after letting in three of the first six shots he faced, and Boughner indicated he regretted not pulling him him then.

«In retrospect, maybe I should have,» Boughner said.

Jones has a record of 5-3-0 this year, but his stats are awful, to say the least. He has a goals against average of 4.09 and a save percentage of .865, third worst among 45 NHL goalies who have played in at least five games this season.

«That's not up to our standard, that goaltending,» Boughner said. «I mean, we've given him a chance here to grab the net, especially with (Devan Dubnyk) being hurt. Again, we're not expecting him to win hockey games for us, to stand on his head. But we've got to have solid goaltending, especially at the beginning of games."

«It's not up to our standard and I'm sure it's not up to his own," Boughner added.

Rookie Alexei Melnichuk came in for the last nine minutes of the game against L.A., stopping all five shots he faced. It was the third time this season that Jones has been pulled before the game ended. With Dubnyk out, Boughner may turn to Melnichuk for the start for the start against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday, but that would put Melnichuk in the tough position of facing an elite team in the first start of his NHL career. The nine minutes he played Thursday night were his first nine in the National Hockey League.
