On Thursday's "Insider Trading" segment on TSN, Pierre LeBrun stated that the NHL is looking into changing up the format for the draft lottery.

"Bill Daly confirmed to me that the NHL is working on changing the format of the draft lottery. We don't know exactly, but we assume (from talking to others around the NHL) that's probably going to increase the chances of bottom teams getting the first overall pick. A lot of people felt a team like Detroit should not have been picking fourth" LeBrun said.

Currently the three lowest ranked teams in the standings have a combined 43.5% odds of getting the first overall pick. The 31st ranked team has 18.5%, 30th ranked has 13.5%, and 29th ranked has 11.5% odds.

The remaining 12 teams teams that missed the playoffs (28th-17th ranked teams) have a combined have a 56.5% odds at getting the first overall pick.

During the 2020 NHL draft lottery, controversy arose as a team from the Qualifying Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs clinched the first overall pick. Team E's ball was picked by NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly despite only having a 2.5% chance at getting the first overall pick. The lottery win by Team E meant that the NHL had to conduct a second lottery for teams who lost in the Qualifying Round. The New York Rangers went on to have the first overall pick, and selected Alexis Lafreniere.
