With COVID-19 carving out a warpath through the NHL ranks, leaving several teams shutdown while they await clearance to return to play, the Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines cannot arrive fast enough.

Previously, the NHL had announced that it does not intend to jump any lines to vaccinate players and that all 31 organizations are comfortable waiting their turn. However, the probable private sale of the vaccine may present the league with an opportunity to secure a large enough quantity to inoculate all players, officials, staff and executives - in which case, this may all become a moot point.

Vegas Golden Knights head coach Peter DeBoer had a sensational response on Thursday when asked whether or not he is in favor of priority vaccinations for professional athletes, skipping over several vulnerable classes within the public body.

"I have 80-year-old parents who haven't had it yet," said DeBoer, "so I'd have a hard time watching a young, healthy pro athlete get [the vaccine] before somebody like that."

Kudos to Peter DeBoer for his careful consideration towards folks who have a more immediate need for the vaccine, putting others needs - and particularly those with a higher risk of succumbing to the deadly virus - before those of his own hockey club/other professional athletes.

With the various vaccines currently in circulation, it's just a matter of time before the players get their turn - and things can slowly begin to return to normal. Until then, I'm of a similar mindset to DeBoer. The vaccine should reach those who need it most first.
