Ron Hextall's hiring as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this week was certainly surprising. Hextall is best known as the goaltender, and a rough one at that, for the Penguins long-time rival the Philadelphia Flyers, a team he served as GM with for more than four years. But, when an opportunity like this comes along it doesn't matter who it's with, you take it. And it appears Hextall was biding his time waiting for another GM position to come along.

Since being fired as the Flyers GM in 2018, Hextall has been serving as an advisor with the L.A. Kings in their hockey operations department. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, in his latest edition of 31 Thoughts, stated Hextall was offered the position of assistant GM recently with the Seattle Kraken. He decided against it as he was convinced another offer to be a general manager would come along, and he was right.

"Score one for betting on yourself," said Friedman.

Meanwhile, Friedman said nine people we interviewed for the GM position in Pittsburgh. One, of course, was Hextall. Another was Brian Burke, who was appointed President of Hockey Operations when Hextall was hired. The others, in alphabetical order are:

"Interim GM Patrik Allvin (who returns to his assistant GM role with Pittsburgh), Boston's John Ferguson, Michael Futa, OHL London's Mark Hunter, Jason Karmanos, Colorado's Chris MacFarland and NHL Network's Kevin Weekes."

"Weekes, I believe, got a long look for the role Burke received," Friedman added. "It opens more possibilities for him."
