The NHL is known for aggressive gameplay and fights on the ice. Yet, this is not generally expected of rookie players in the league, especially not in their first game. However, one rookie decided to take the road less traveled and target one of the toughest players in the league.

Rookie Destroys 900-Game Veteran In First NHL Game

In today's game between the Islanders and Rangers, Matthew Rempe made his debut with the latter New York team. Yet, in the very first period, this 6-foot-8 rookie took on Matt Martin, clocking him several times to the side of the head.

"Matt Rempe NHL debut dropping the glovesnot a big deeeal 🥊"

Matt Martin himself is no small target, at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. Yet even this 900-game veteran was no match for this absolute unit, especially with the fight starting at the puck drop.

Rempe Becomes An Instant Legend In NHL Debut

With his first NHL game and fight both officially under his belt, Rempe has already become a legend in the eyes of hockey fans everywhere. It takes a lot of guts to start a fight in your very first game, but at least ten-fold to start one with a powerhouse like 30-year-old Matt Martin of the Islanders.

"First NHL shift and first NHL Fight in front of 70,000 people.

Matt Rempe is a legend."

With Rempe's popularity soaring before the game is even over, it might cue other rookies to start engaging in this more aggressive gameplay. This could be very interesting as we approach the trade deadlines ahead of the play-off season.

The two New York teams are currently at the end of the 2nd period, with the Rangers trailing at 3-4.
