When the Seattle Kraken took on the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night, we witnessed one of the more peculiar penalties in the league. The Kraken were assessed a bench minor for playing the puck from the bench.

This happens to be one of the rarest penalties in hockey. Who in their right mind would play the puck from the bench? Well, forward Tomas Tatar was the culprit for this unusual incident.

What led to this bizarre call in the first place?

The incident occurred during the second period, in which Philadelphia was leading 1-0. During a routine line change, the puck had made its way over towards the Seattle bench. Tatar, who was coming onto the ice, had played the puck while sitting on the boards, thus the referees making the call.

The official call is interference from the bench, as stated in Rule 56.2.

A minor penalty for interference shall be imposed (vii) On any identifiable player on the players' bench or penalty bench who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play.

What are the odds of this happening again?

Now, this is probably just a total misunderstanding on Tatar's behalf. He most likely thought he had touched the ice or something along those lines. Accidents happen. Luckily, it didn't harm Seattle, as they went on to win the game 2-1 in overtime.

The real question is, do you think this call will ever happen again in our lifetimes? While I'm sure there are some hopefuls out there, it's tough to say for sure. Only time will tell, but it's safe to say, it's highly unlikely.
