Today it was revealed that the Buffalo Sabres are using a major loophole to construct their roster this week. This has led to allegations of cheating by some individuals.

Sabres Find Loophole To Increase Roster Size

The Buffalo Sabres announced today that the team would be reactivating both Jeff Skinner and Jordan Greenway from Injured Reserve.

With this roster announcement, the Sabres would normally have to make a corresponding move to create roster space. However, according to Elliotte Friedman, this will not be the case for the Sabres.

Quirk in Christmas rules...Buffalo can roster 24 (one over the max) since they are under the cap. Makes some teams crazy, because they feel it gives an unfair advantage, but they are not required to make a loan/demotion during Holiday Freeze

This is allowed because the Sabres will remain below the salary cap regardless of these moves. Once the Christmas break ends they will be required to make a move to be roster-compliant.

This announcement has led to some thinking the Sabres have an unfair advantage.

Fans Complain NHL Is Giving Sabres An Unfair Advantage

In the replies to the post from Elliotte Friedman some are upset the Sabres are allowed to do this.

While these replies do seem satirical it still shows that some feel there could be exploits to this rule. The Sabres are a struggling team outside of the playoff race at the moment. If a team further in the race did the same thing we might have seen more uproar.

The Sabres will play two more games before the Christmas break in which they will have this advantage. The first game will be against the Maple Leafs and the second will be against the New York Rangers.
