In light of the recent tragedy that led to the passing of Adam Johnson, there's been a massive push for improved player protection in the NHL, and it's gaining momentum.
A legend joins the movement
Ahead of tonight's matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL legend Claude Giroux of the Ottawa Senators is reportedly going to join the player safety movement.
Claude Giroux said he will use the neck guard this evening. Wants to try it out. #Sens
Giroux, like many players has never worn a neck guard in the NHL before, but given how important this push is for the players, it makes complete sense to jump on board.
A sweeping movement
Several players and teams have already taken steps to improve neck protection since the tragic incident, with names like Rasmus Dahlin, Erik Karlsson and T.J. Oshie all wearing the new neck guards on the ice.
The NHL can't yet mandate the neck protection for players, but given how important player safety is in one of the most dangerous sports on earth, the players seem to be taking it seriously, and that's a great sign.
