Next Chapter in Longtime Exec's Career

Brian Burke is one of the NHL's most famous executives of all time, and he'll soon be having a whole new role under his name: executive director of a union for female professional hockey players.

As part of the PWHL's unveiling, the former NHL GM has been announced as the PWHL Players' Association's executive director (formerly the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association). Six teams will compete in this new pro women's hockey league, one that comes after the PHF (Professional Hockey Federation) was bought by the PWHLPA.

Fighting for Players' Rights

Calling it «the most exciting day in the history of women's hockey,» Burke's new role as PWHLPA executive was rumoured earlier this month, and has now been made official. He replaces former Canadian women's hockey player and Hall of Fame Jayna Hefford in that role.

Having most recently been the Pittsburgh Penguins' president of hockey ops, Burke will now be in charge of a union that recently ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. Given his history with progressive causes in the game (specifically his support of the LGBTQ+ community), Burke will now be advocating for the women's game and fighting for players' rights as the PWHL gets going.
