The Colorado Avalanche have been a powerhouse in the NHL for several years now. However, they did miss out on one potential acquisition that would've confirmed some massive rumors at the time.

The 2022 Trade Deadline

At the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline the Colorado Avalanche were looking to add to their forward depth. They were on their way to an eventual Stanley Cup that year but one player reportedly missed out after the Avalanche failed to trade for him.

The 2022 Trade Deadline had several intriguing players. One of the headliners this year was Claude Giroux. The playmaking forward has had an exceptional career that will likely land him in the Hall of Fame however he is missing that elusive Stanley Cup. At the end of his contract with Philadelphia, he was looking to chase a championship. Unfortunately for him, he was traded to the Florida Panthers instead.

Colorado Confirms They Had Interest In Giroux

While the rumors were never confirmed at the time it was reported that the Avalanche took a significant shot at trading for Giroux. Today this was confirmed by the Avalanche themselves when they did an auction of unused team jerseys.

One of the jerseys that was auctioned off was a Claude Giroux #28 Avalanche jersey. This means at some point the Avalanche got close enough to acquiring Giroux that they had a jersey printed for him to wear upon coming to the team.

What Could Have Been

If Claude Giroux had ended up in Colorado one can only imagine the magic that could've been made. Seeing players like Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen teaming up with a playmaker like Giroux would have been electric.

From the Flyers' perspective, they are probably pretty happy with the deal they struck up. They ended up with forward Owen Tippett who had a breakout year this past season as well as a First Round Pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft.
