The Vancouver Canucks have signed restricted free agent Jake Virtanen to a new two-year deal, officially avoiding an arbitration hearing with the 24-year-old winger. The deal is worth $2.55 million per season, up significantly from the $825k Virtanen made last season.

Virtanen was a sixth overall draft pick of Vancouver back in 2014. Since then, he has played in 279 NHL games, scoring 50 goals and 95 points. His best season came in 2019-20, when he recorded 18 goals and 36 points in 69 games.

The agreement puts Vancouver over the cap by about $1.5 million, meaning a move or moves will have to be made before the 2020-21 season begins.
