The seven teams that did not take part in the NHL's Return to Play program have been granted tentative permission to hold longer training camps before the start of the 2020-21 season. The move makes sense as the Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators, and San Jose Sharks have not played hockey since last March.

The clubs' general managers reportedly requested the extra training camp time in August, according to TSN's Insider Trading. While the details are still unknown, their proposal has reportedly requested a minimum of two additional weeks of camp. The usual NHL training camp is two weeks in total.

Meanwhile, Frank Seravalli of Insider Trading has noted that many players are concerned about what will happen to salaries next season in the event of a shortened season, or one that is cancelled completely.

“Every single player in the National Hockey League wants to know the answer to what happens to player salaries? Will they be prorated in the event of a shortened season? And there really is no answer to this point," said Seravalli. "The NHLPA has been operating on the belief this entire time that as soon as the players play one game in the 2020-21 season, that they will receive all of their stated salary minus 20 per cent for escrow and 10 per cent for a salary deferral. But at this point, there's been very little talk."

“The two sides have not yet met to begin to hash out these plans. The league has remained quiet," Seravalli continued. "It doesn't explicitly say in the memorandum of understanding for this collective bargaining agreement what happens in the event of a shortened season. So stay tuned, this could be a real bone of contention at some point in the future moving forward. Something that both of these sides jointly say they're going to have to discuss.”
