They listed both Johnny Gaudreau and David Rittich as players whose days in Calgary are likely limited. In Gaudreau's case, he has two seasons remaining on a deal paying him $6.75 million per season. Francis said he believes the Flames will move on from him as he does not believe Gaudreau will be interested in re-signing with the Flames when the current deal comes to an end. He also brought up what many have talked about over the years, which is Gaudreau's inability to pick up his game come the postseason. In 30 career playoff games, he has posted just 19 points.
However, he did also make it clear he does not believe a trade with the Flames' star forward will happen this season, given his career low 58-point season. He thinks the Flames will likely hold on to him hoping that he has a big year and trade him, potentially next offseason, when his market value is back to what it was a season prior when he put up a career high 99 points.
As for Rittich, Francis believes that due to the fact they signed Jacob Markstrom to a six-year deal, the writing is on the wall for the Czech goaltender. Markstrom coming in means that the Flames want him to be their clear-cut starter for the next six seasons, meaning Rittich would be their backup, a role Francis doesn't believe he is interested in. He is a restricted free agent this next summer, meaning that if he has a good year as the Flames backup, teams with goaltending issues will likely make offers to the Flames.
Of course, these are all just hypotheticals, but it is tough to argue Francis' points. It will likely be a very interesting and busy next year or so for general manager Brad Treliving and his staff, who will be forced to make some very difficult decisions.
