The Kunlun Red Star have revealed that they almost managed to land a recent 1st overall pick.

Kunlun Almost Signs Slafkovsky

The KHL is the best league in all of Europe which has most of its teams based in Russia but some are in other nations. Of these nations, China has a team called the Kunlun Red Star.

Recently, the Red Star have revealed how they almost managed to get 2022 1st overall pick, Juraj Slafkovsky, to play for them.

Fun fact: [Slafkovsky] was nearing to sign with us before being drafted in the NHL

They also gave a few more details:

It's been an option back to spring 2021. In KHL, you can play 20-skaters roster if two of them are U-20 players. We were close to add him to the squad. Anyways, he had a great season in Finland then, playing the same line with Jack Rodewald who is our player now

Slafkovsky's NHL Career

After the failed transaction with Kunlun, Slafkovsky went on a tear. After winning MVP of the Olympics, Slafkovsky skyrocketed up draft boards and was eventually selected 1st overall by the Montreal Canadiens.

In his first NHL season, he scored 4 goals and 10 points in 39 games but unfortunately had his season end early due to injury.

He will look to have elevated production in an elevated role with the Canadiens in his sophomore campaign.
