The Hurricanes have plenty of defensive depth which means one of their more expensive defenders may be on his way out.

Carolina's Loaded Defense

The Carolina Hurricanes have arguably the deepest and best defensive core in the NHL. Their left side currently consists of Jaccob Slavin, Dmitry Orlov, Brady Skjei, and Caleb Jones. Their right side is arguably even deeper with Brent Burns, Brett Pesce, Tony DeAngelo, Jalen Chatfield, and Dylan Coghlan.

With so many defensemen and only six roster spots, many have begun speculating on whether or not the Hurricanes will be moving one out in favor of other assets.

Likely To Move Pesce or Skjei?

In a recent article for The Hockey News, Lyle Richardson went over the Hurricanes' defense and who they are most likely to move.

Richardson said the following about Carolina potentially moving Pesce or Skjei:

"Given the Hurricanes' blueline depth, they can afford to part with Skjei or Pesce in a deal to add a scoring forward. Skjei carries an average annual value of $5.25 million, while Pesce carries a cap hit of $4.025 million."

Both of these players are top of the line and could prove themselves to be blue chip trade assets come the deadline. With Carolina's need for scoring and a 2nd line center, they could wind up targeting players like Elias Lindholm, Mark Scheifele, or even William Nylander (even though he's a winger) and be willing to part ways with either Skjei or Pesce to make the deal happen.

As seen on The Hockey News - WILL THE CAROLINA HURRICANES TRADE A DEFENSEMAN THIS SUMMER?
