Today, the board of governors for the Champions Hockey League announced that competition for the 2020-21 season would be cancelled due to operational and financial issues caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“All things considered, the CHL Board had to come to the very difficult conclusion that playing a 2020/21 season is not manageable for the Champions Hockey League or the participating clubs from both an operational and economic perspective. The health and safety of all participating teams is of the highest priority, and with the current development of the epidemiological situation we unfortunately would not be able to guarantee that everyone always returns home in good health and without needing to undergo quarantine restrictions, no matter how sophisticated our protection concepts are.” CHL president Peter Zahner said.

The Champions Hockey League was founded in 2013 and is a competition that features the 32 best hockey clubs across Europe. Teams qualify for the CHL based on how they finish in their respective leagues. The 32 teams are placed into eight groups of four, and play each other in a double round robin format for the group stage. The top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stages where they play in a two game series and the team who has the most goals at the end of the two games advances to the next round. The round of 16, quarter finals, and semi finals all feature the two-game series, while the final is just one game.

In the 6 seasons the competition has been played, Swedish team Frolunda HC has won four times, and runners up once, being the most successful team so far.
