Former Pittsburgh Penguins play by play announcer Mike Lange has sadly passed away today at the age of 76.

Pittsburgh Penguins fans have not gotten much good news this season.

Sidney Crosby re-signed with the team during training camp but since then it has largely been down hill.

Unfortunately, those fans got some more sad news today as one of their franchise icons has passed away.

That would be former play-by-play announcer Mike Lange, who was 76 years old.

Lange served as the play-by-play announcer for 30 years, starting in 1976 and ending in 2006.

After that he moved over to the radio side where he continued to give his voice to the team until 2021.

The Penguins have not had a consistent play-by-play voice since Lange switched positions nearly 20 years ago.

Paul Steigerwald took over at the position for just 11 years before he was then replaced by Steve Mears who served in the role up until the 2022-23 season.

Since then, Josh Getzoff has been the voice of the Penguins.

Penguins fans have been sending their regards to Lange and his family since learning of his passing.

It is clear how much he meant to this franchise and their fanbase based on the response we are seeing to this sad news.

You can tell how passionate Lange was about the Penguins and hockey in general just based on the way he used to call the games.

One fan was kind enough to post a compilation of some of his best calls in his career.

Everyone here at Markerzone would like to send our deepest condolences to the Lange family, his friends, and Penguins fans who grew up listening to him. Rest in peace Mike.
