The San Jose Sharks announced the signings of two forwards on Tuesday. Matt Nieto will be returning for another stint in San Jose after signing a one-year contract. Along with him, franchise legend Patrick Marleau will also be returning after he inked a 1-year, $700K deal.

Patrick Marleau will be returning for his 23rd season in the league, and he is just 44 games from breaking Gordie Howe's games played record (1,767). The 41-year-old tallied 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in 66 games last season, splitting time between the San Jose Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Marleau is the franchise's leader in games played (1,551), goals (518), and points (1,102), while also being second in assists (548) behind teammate Joe Thornton (804).

Matt Nieto is just 27 years old, and he posted 8 goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 70 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season. He is a beast on the penalty kill, and brings great speed to his game. With Barclay Goodrow being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Melker Karlsson not re-signing, this is an especially good pickup for a team looking for another penalty killer. He was originally selected by the Sharks back in the 2011 NHL Draft in the second round.

These two pickups should help a Sharks team that was devastated with injuries and offensive struggles last season. Although both players will likely play bottom-six roles, San Jose could definitely use some proven players in their lineup instead of AHL forwards that do not perform well. With Marleau re-signing, don't be surprised if Jumbo Joe joins him soon.
