It appears the most sought after free agent on the market this offseason has found a new home. All that needs to be done is for the Vegas Golden Knights to clear cap space in order to get Alex Pietrangelo under contract.

According to several reports, Vegas is on the verge of signing the 30-year-old blueliner to a new deal. However, Vegas currently only has just over $2 million in cap space. According to reporter Andy Strickland, there's a plan in place.

"Hearing Nate Schmidt will be traded to the Florida Panthers to create the necessary space to sign Alex Pietrangelo," said the Fox Sports reporter on Twitter.

However, Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Period says a Schmidt trade is in place, but he doesn't believe it's with Florida.

Schmidt is set to make $5.95 million a season for the next five years.

Pietrangelo has spent his entire NHL career in St. Louis since being drafted fourth overall by the team in 2008. He was also the team's captain. Rumours have put his next deal in the $9 million per season range.
