The Boston Bruins announced today they've signed forward Craig Smith to a three-year contract, worth $9.3 million ($3.1 million AAV). Smith had 18 goals in 69 games during the 2019-20 season, and it appears the Bruins were wanting to add a depth goal scorer to their roster.

Smith, 31, was drafted in the fourth round, 98th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2009 NHL entry draft. In 661 regular season games, he has 330 points (162 G, 168 A), 264 penalty minutes, and is a +67. In 52 career playoff games, Smith has put up 16 points (7 G, 9 A), 12 penalty minutes, and is a -3. He became an unrestricted free agent yesterday at 12 pm ET, after spending the first 9 years of his NHL career with the Nashville Predators.

Internationally, Smith has represented the USA on a few occasions, most recently at the 2014 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championships where he was named an alternate captain. In 8 games, he put up 8 points (3 G, 5 A), 10 penalty minutes, and was a +5 as the USA finished sixth after losing to the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal.

This should be a great depth signing for the Bruins. They tried to boost their depth scoring by acquiring Ondrej Kase back in February, but he hasn't scored a goal in 17 games (regular season and playoffs) with the Bruins. Smith should slot in on Boston's third line with Charlie Coyle and Nick Ritchie.
