The Calgary Flames had a big start to the opening of free agency, and late last night they added another piece to their puzzle. The Flames inked defenceman Chris Tanev to a four-year contract worth $18 million dollars, and comes with an average annual value of $4.5 million. There was expectation that Tanev would sleep on the offer that the Canucks made him, and then get back to them, but with the Toronto Maple Leafs signing former Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie, it likely made Calgary more desperate to sign Tanev.

Tanev, 30, was signed to a three-year entry-level contract by the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent out of college on June 2nd, 2010.

In 514 regular season games, Tanev has 118 points (22 G, 96 A), 121 penalty minutes, and is a +43. In 33 career playoff games, he's put up 10 points (1 G, 9 A), 4 penalty minutes, and is a +5. During the 2019-20 season, Tanev tied his career high in points with 20 (2 G, 18 A).

Internationally, Tanev has represented Canada once in his career, and it was at the 2016 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championships. In 10 games, he had 1 point (1 A), 0 penalty minutes, and was a +8 as Canada won the gold medal for the 26th time.

Tanev will be a great addition to the Flames defensive core, he brings size, leadership qualities, and has a bit of playoff experience. Expect Tanev to slot in on the second pairing, with possibly Noah Hanifin.
