In an article from Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now, Peng reworks a potential trade of his that would see Karlsson has to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Peng did a slight revision and came upon a workable three-team scenario involving San Jose, Pittsburgh, & Chicago.
This deal would give Pittsburgh a major piece for one final Stanley Cup run, but does the 33-year-old Karlsson have another stunning return to top form in him? And is giving up one of their top prospects in Poulin a worthwhile move for a Penguins team already struggling with a barren pool? Poulin has struggled with inconsistency issues making the jump from Junior Hockey, and earlier in the season left the AHL Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins for "personal reasons".
Even with uncertainty over his situation, Poulin has shown himself to have an immense amount of talent when he's in his game, and his loss would be another hole in a lack of youth for Pittsburgh, with 2023 1st Round Pick Brayden Yager being a decent consolation, but not enough to build a future.
It's no secret that Karlsson is likely headed out of San Jose. Reports have come out that make it likely that Karlsson is looking for a pathway to a championship, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, under new GM Kyle Dubas, have made it clear in signaling that they still view themselves as contenders, even with an already aging core.
Another question here is the addition of Jeff Petry. Not only is Petry signed until 2025 with a NTC, but also makes $6.25M per season. The Blackhawks have a little over $12.8M in cap space according to CapFriendly, and with the addition of 2023 1st Overall Pick Connor Bedard, it's uncertain if Petry fits Chicago's plans going forward. As well, does Pittsburgh, a team desperate for prospect security, risk giving up multiple draft picks for Karlsson?
It's a tough question. On the one hand, you have a 100-Point Defenseman who has shown they still have the skill to be one of the best in the game, on the other, you have a player who had 35PTS the year prior, and on a stronger Penguins team, Karlsson can go either way. If Pittsburgh is willing to make one last push at contending, they do so at the risk of gaining a shot at winning but in exchange for what already lies a bleak and uncertain future.
