Matt Murray has signed a contract extension with the Ottawa Senators just days after being dealt there from the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to Elliott Friedman of Sportsnet, the deal is 4 years, worth $25 million ($6.25 million AAV).

Murray, 26, was drafted in the third round, 83rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL entry draft. In 199 regular season games, he has a record of 117 wins, 53 losses, 19 overtime/shootout losses, a 2.66 GAA, a .914 save percentage, and 11 shutouts. In 51 career playoff games, Murray has a record of 29 wins, 21 losses, a 2.18 GAA, a .921 save percentage, and 6 shutouts.

Murray won back to back Stanley Cups as a member of the Penguins during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. He was traded to Ottawa on Wednesday for prospect Jonathan Gruden, and a second round pick in the 2020 NHL entry draft.

This was a great move for the Senators. The prospect pool they have, as well as the group they currently have are up and coming, and should be a legitimate threat in about three years. The trade and now signing of Matt Murray gives top goaltending prospect, Filip Gustavsson a little bit more time to develop and potentially be the starter in Ottawa in four or five years.
