The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Bobby Ryan to a one-year, $1 million deal.

Ryan, 33, was recently bought out by the Ottawa Senators, who he had two seasons remaining with on a deal paying him $7.25 million per season. His numbers have fallen off the past few seasons, including this most recent where he posted just five goals and eight points in 24 games. He has failed to hit the 50-point mark in the last four seasons.

This appears to be a ‘show-me' contract for Ryan, as he will be able to get quite a bit of ice time on a young rebuilding Red Wings team who is likely to struggle again this season. It is easy to root for Ryan, who left the Senators during this last season for an extended time to go to rehab for an alcohol addiction. Perhaps taking the time he needed to get himself right will benefit his game and see him post bigger numbers than we have seen from him in recent years.
