The Detroit Red Wings have made a change in where defensive prospect Moritz Seider will spend the 2020-21 season. Originally, Seider was supposed to be in the DEL, Germany's top league, with Alder Mannheim, but due to the league not starting until mid-December, he will spend the season with Rogle BK in the SHL. It's also worth noting that Seider will be in the SHL for the entirety of the 2019-20 season, and not until NHL training camps open like most loans have been.

Seider, 19, was drafted in the first round, 6th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2019 NHL entry draft which came as a surprise to many people. He was ranked 6th within the category of international skaters by NHL central scouting, which should have seen him go anywhere from 10-15th overall.

Prior to coming over to North America, he spent two seasons in the DEL with Mannheim, putting up 6 points (2 G, 4 A), 8 penalty minutes, and was a +2 in 33 regular season games. In 14 playoff games, Seider had 5 points (5 A), 0 penalty minutes, and was a +6 as Mannheim won the DEL championship.

He spent the 2019-20 season with the Detroit's AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he had 22 points (2 G, 22 A), 28 penalty minutes, and was a +5 in 49 games.

Internationally, Seider has represented Germany on many occasions, most recently at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships where he was named captain. In 7 games, he had 6 points (6 A), 6 penalty minutes, and was a +/-0. Germany finished last in their group, meaning they would have to battle the last place team in the other group, Kazakhstan, in a best of three series where the losing team got relegated. Germany ultimately won the series, 2 games to 1 and will stay in the top group of the World Juniors for the 2021 tournament.

Playing a full season over in Sweden will certainly do wonders for Seider's development. As every prospect does, he has some specific parts of his game he needs to work on, but should be a mainstay in the Red Wings lineup as soon as the 2021-22 NHL season.
