Last offseason, a trade was completed between two Canadian teams, but a major piece of this trade that failed has just been reported.

Anderson Escapes Trade

It has been almost a year now since the Calgary Flames traded longtime center Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens along with a future first-round draft pick as part of a salary dump deal.

But now, it has just been revealed that this trade was originally supposed to be a lot more than just a contract dump.

The original deal was still supposed to be Monahan, a first headed to Montreal along with an extra piece. But in this case, the Flames were going to receive gritty, talented forward Josh Anderson as part of moving on from Monahan.

"From my understanding the original deal with Montreal was supposed to be Monahan, a 1st and an extra piece for Josh Anderson, but Nazem Kadri decided to become a Flame so it ended up being a cap dump."

Kadri Instead Of Anderson

The reported reason that this trade fell through between the two teams is that all star forward Nazem Kadri decided to sign with the Flames in free agency last summer, which took up the spot that Anderson was going to take in Calgary.

This lead to the Flames choosing to sign Kadri for the monster deal that earns him $7 million per year until 2029 over trading for Anderson. We will see if this was the right decision for Calgary going forward.
