The 2022-23 seasons hadn't even ended before we found out that the Ottawa Senators were unlikely to reach a new contract with restricted free agent Alex DeBrincat and were looking to move him. Now that his contract demands have been revealed, we have an indication as to why.

Meier Money

According to Sens Insider Bruce Garrioch, DeBrincat is seeking similar money and term as Tio Meier recently got in New Jersey. Garrioch said DeBrincat wants around $70 million dollars on an eight-year contract. That would give him an average annual value of $8.7 million.

Current Deal

DeBrincat's expiring deal paid him $6.4 million annually, so $8.7 million is a significant raise. The 25-year-old's agent has told The Athletic that DeBrincat has not been given permission to talk to potential trade partners about money and term.
"As far as I have been advised, there has been no agreement of any kind on an actual trade involving Alex and I would require that before entering into an actual negotiation. We are waiting patiently for that to happen.

"Agents and players don't make trades, that's the GM's job." - Jeff Jackson, Debrincat's agent, The Athletic

DeBrincat scored 27 goals for the Senators last season, along with 66 points in total. He played all 82 regular season games.
