The Russian Ice Hockey Federation has invested millions into growing the sport of hockey with their international allies.

Russia Invests In International Allies

Historically, hockey has been a sport run by North Americans and more recently Europeans. However, Russia (partially in eastern Europe and partially in northern Asia) is looking to grow the game past the typical markets.
Russia is currently in an alliance with India, Brazil, and China called BRICS. All of these nations other than Russia are non-traditional and have massive potential for being international powerhouses.
Today, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation has announced its plan to build new ice rinks in India to grow the game.

Indian Hockey

India is currently the second largest nation in the world and is set to surpass China in population by the end of the year. This is a massive untapped market and will likely see massive growth of international hockey in the next 20 years.
India is a prime nation to grow hockey in considering their massive size as well as how they can often seat thousands for their sporting events.
They have not hosted any IIHF competition since they have not had a rink up to size but Russia will be changing that. We can also expect Russia to invest in youth development to see top tier Indian athletes eventually join the NHL.
