Barry Trotz's first week as the General Manager of the Predators has been quite eventful.
He acquired Luke Schenn, Ryan O'Reilly, and, most surprisingly, decided to buy out Matt Duchene's contract.
Before that happened, it seems like he attempted to trade Duchene. When he realized the trade wouldn't work, he took the easier route and relied on O'Reilly instead.
Trotz had a specific plan for Duchene - to trade him for a key player from the Capitals.
Trotz's idea was to acquire Evgeny Kuznetsov, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
Per Elliotte Friedman:
"Before Nashville signed Ryan O'Reilly, and they might've done it anyway, I don't know, but they were talking to Washington about Kuznetsov, l wonder if it was a Kuznetsov-for-Duchene deal."
Kuznetsov's an important player for the Capitals and it would've been surprising to see him leave the team after spending all his career in Washington. Especially considering his tight relationship with Alexander Ovechkin.
