The greatest sport in the world has been growing at a amazing rate. What's even more Inspiring is the amount of females that have decided to join a league or even just watch hockey. What's even better is seeing women work in the NHL and other leagues, such as the Canadian Hockey League.

Speaking of junior hockey, during the 2023 WHL Prospect Draft, the Portland Winterhawks made a groundbreaking selection, drafting 15-year-old goaltender Morgan Stickney. Chosen with the 215th overall pick in the tenth round, Stickney made history as the first female American-born player to be drafted in the WHL.
Stickney, a native of Redondo Beach, California, is only the second female player ever to be selected in a WHL Prospect Draft. This follows the selection of defenceman Chloe Primerano, who was chosen by the Vancouver Giants in 2022. Primerano, taken in the 13th round with the 268th overall pick, was the first-ever female player to be selected by a WHL team.
In the year leading up to her historic selection, Stickney played for Shattuck St. Mary's 16U women's program. There, she showcased her skills, posting an impressive 23-4-3 record in 33 games this season. Furthermore, her statistics featured a 1.52 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage, underscoring her potential and readiness for the upcoming challenges in the WHL.
"I've always been a fan of the Winterhawks and to now be a part of this organization is a dream come true,» Stickney said in a Winterhawks news release.

«To be drafted in the same league (Canadian Hockey League) as Manon Rhéaume and drafted to a team with a history of goalie legacy is an honor. I want to thank everyone who has supported me to this point and I look forward to what's to come."

Unfortunately there will be some men that will make some disrespectful comments or feel it's bad for the sport, but they couldn't be more wrong. On behalf of the Markerzone team, we would like to congratulate Morgan on her amazing accomplishment.
