It was the only place he was willing to go. Now it looks like he's going to be leaving. Patrick Kane spoke today, and it appears he won't retire as a Ranger.

Sentiment is That Kane Won't Stay in the Big Apple

Patrick Kane's trade to New York was essentially inevitable from the start. It hit a road block when the Rangers went after Vladimir Tarasenko, but when Kane expressed that it was the only place he would be willing to go, things got back on track.
The Blackhawks legend, who spent fifteen years with the franchise, seemed to have his eyes set on New York long term, considering that it was the only place he was willing to go. However, it now seems that things have changed.
In his exit interview, he expressed his gratitude for his time as a ranger:
«I don't have a bad word to say about the organizationI think it's a special group in here. I think they'll find a way to win.»

Note the emphases on they'll. It sure sounds like Kane doesn't think he'll be part of a winning Rangers team.
Patrick Kane didn't sound like he was returning to #NYR, but expressed how grateful he was for the opportunity and how awesome it was.
He may sign back in Chicago, or maybe he'll hop on to a team that he sees as a real contender.
Another feasible scenario is him signing in his hometown of Buffalo, as that team looks to finally make the playoffs for the first time in a decade. They have the cap space, and he fills a team need.
We will have to wait and see what the future hall-of-famer does next. Does he shock everybody by heading back to the Hawks, or does he help the Sabres make their playoff dreams come true?
