A pretty bizarre play unfolded during Thursday night's game between the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators.

Late in the second period, the Avalanche dumped the puck down into Ottawa's zone and it appeared that it was going to be called icing, but wasn't. The puck then came out in front where Mads Sogaard covered it, but once against, the whistle wasn't blown. Avalanche forward Lars Eller then came in and poked the puck past the goal line and it eventually stood as the game winner as Colorado won by a score of 5-4.

Following the game, Senators captain Brady Tkachuk came to the defence of Sogaard, saying he's the goaltender of the future in Ottawa and made a pretty bold claim, stating that he's going to lead the team to the Stanley Cup.

"I think it's one of the weirdest goals probably this year and we all believe Sogaard is not at fault and we feel terrible for him. He's been so key, just a shitty situation. Of course he's a young goalie, but he's our goalie of the future and he's going to take us to a Stanley Cup and he's going to take us to that next level that we want to get to. It's just a shitty situation that he's in right now and with the pressure of him being a young goalie, but we all believe in him. Like I said, it's unbelievable how good of a player he is already and he's already stepping in and giving us a chance to win. He's one of the nicest and most genuine and one of the greatest guys to be around."

It's nice to see Tkachuk standing up for Sogaard, who has been up and down between Ottawa and their AHL affiliate in Belleville a handful of times this season. The 22-year-old is still developing and there's no doubt that he'll be the number one goaltender in Ottawa in the years to come.
